HTC One M9 using Snapdragon 810 v2.1, adds more confusion to overheating saga

Jeff Gordon, HTC's senior global online communications manager, confirmed in a tweet that the One M9 is using the improved version of Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset known as v2.1. He also understands from Qualcomm that "virtually all OEMs who've announced devices with Snapdragon 810 are currently using v2.1".

The overheating saga plaguing the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset takes another twist after Jeff Gordon, HTC's senior global online communications manager, posted a series of tweets.

Gordon finds it interesting that "some OEMs are positioning the use of the Snapdragon 810 v2.1 processor as a product differentiator" although Qualcomm told him that "virtually all OEMs who've announced devices with Snapdragon 810" are also using the same v2.1 chipset. He also confirmed that the One M9 is indeed using v2.1.

While Gordon did not explicitly mention the name of the OEM, it is obvious that he is referring to OnePlus. The Chinese company teased last month that its upcoming OnePlus 2 flagship smartphone is "cooler than ever" thanks to all the necessary precautions and close working relationship with Qualcomm.

If we take a look at what's being reported, the truth is far from reality. HTC reportedly fixed the overheating issue on the One M9 via a software update in March. LG initially denied that there were issues with the Snapdragon 810 processors, but admitted later that the "initial batch" of processors had some problems which had been dealt with.

Just last month, Sony issued a statement confirming that its Xperia Z3+ smartphone and Z4 Tablet are suffering from overheating issues and a software fix was in the pipeline. Perhaps Samsung is wise in its decision to avoid these issues altogether by opting to use its own Exynos processors for the Galaxy S6 models.
