Qualcomm: Snapdragon 810 will not be used in an upcoming flagship device
Qualcomm confirmed during the release of its quarterly earnings report that its Snapdragon 810 processor will not be used in an upcoming flagship device. Is the chipset maker referring to the Samsung Galaxy S6?
Qualcomm may have confirmed that Samsung is not using its Snapdragon 810 chipset for its upcoming Galaxy S6 smartphone.
During its announcement of the first quarter fiscal 2015 results, Qualcomm cautioned investors that its outlook for the second half of the fiscal year could be gloomy. One of the three reasons highlighted include the expectations that its top-of-the-line Snapdragon 810 processors will not be used in an upcoming flagship device.
The use of "a large customer's flagship device" not only spooked investors and caused its shares to fall more than 8%, it also somewhat confirmed rumors that Samsung is indeed ditching the Snapdragon 810 processors in favor of the Exynos chipsets.
Apparently, Qualcomm is facing "hard-to-solve" problems with the Snapdragon 810 processors which include overheating and RAM controller issues. LG earlier denied that there was any overheating issues with the processor used in its latest G Flex 2 smartphone, but just admitted that there were issues with the initial samples of the chipsets.
Besides losing a key customer, Qualcomm stated that a shift in share among OEMs at the premium tier and increasing competition in China are significant headwinds for its semiconductor business in the near term.
