Google requires all OEMs to roll out regular security updates
Given how the Android ecosystem is fragmented, it would be a serious challenge to implement this policy.
Nearly three years after committing to monthly updates for the now-defunct Nexus devices, Google wants all Android OEMs to roll out regular security patches for their devices.
Google's head of Android platform security David Kleidermacher revealed this during the annual I/O developer conference last week. Kleidermacher states that Google has modified the OEM agreements to include provisions for regular security updates.
“We’ve also worked on building security patching into our OEM agreements. Now this will really … lead to a massive increase in the number of devices and users receiving regular security patches.” – David Kleidermacher, Google’s head of Android platform security.
Google's latest move came weeks after a German security firm discovered some Android OEMs lying about their security patches. The firm found that some Android OEMs sometimes claimed to have patches installed that they actually lacked.
Considering how fragmented the Android ecosystem is, it will be very challenging for Google and its OEM partners to implement this.
