Google gets serious about Android security, promises monthly updates for Nexus devices
Google is getting serious about security for its Nexus devices and promises to deliver monthly over-the-air (OTA) updates. Read on to find out more if you are using a Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and Player.
The LG Nexus 4 is among the 7 Nexus devices identified by Google to receive security updates from today.
The Stagefright hack and another Android security flaw that puts the device in a completely unresponsive state have forced Google to step up its efforts to improve security on Android.
In an official blog post, Google promises to deliver regular OTA updates every month which focus on security. Starting from 5th August, Google will roll out security updates for the Nexus 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and Player. These Nexus devices will continue to receive major updates for at least two years and security patches for the longer of three years from initial availability or 18 months from last sale of the device via the Google Store.
Google also reiterated its ongoing efforts to keep Android devices safe from malicious attacks. For example, its Verify Apps tool runs hundreds of millions of antivirus-like security scans daily on Android devices. It also has an Android Security Rewards Program which rewards security researchers who help identify flaws and make the platform more secure.
