Google Pay's Huat Pals game is back with a cute new snake mascot for the Lunar New Year

It's that time of the year again where you could win cash prizes or a brand new Google Pixel device just by sending money or paying with Google Pay! #googlepay #huatpals #cny

If you've been waiting eagerly for Google Pay's Huat Pals game this year, it's finally out. This year, to celebrate the year of the snake, we get a new snake-inspired mascot.

Feed your snake to get a chance to win

This year, you are tasked with collecting five Chinese New Year goodies – New Year cake, love letters, kueh bangkit, mini shrimp rolls and pineapple tart – to feed the snake mascot, aptly named Snax. Once its belly is full with all five different Huat Snacks, you then stand a chance to win prizes ranging from a scratch card with random amounts that can contain up to S$88.88, a Google Pixel 9 smartphone (review here) or a Google Pixel Buds 2 Pro (review here).

To receive a goodie, you can complete any of the following actions:

  • Make eligible payments above S$5 to merchants via QR code or UEN (limited to once a day)
  • Make eligible payments above S$5 to merchants via FavePay (limited to once a day)
  • Send a minimum of S$10 to a friend who is a Google Pay user (limited to once a day)
  • Gift a goodie to a friend and receive a bonus goodie per unique friend gifted once they claim it (up to 5 friends daily)

In-app games

There are also in-app games to provide extra chances at getting goodies, and Huat Match, which debuted last year, is also returning. You just have to match as many auspicious icons as possible within 15 moves in sets of three, and as long as you score more than 450 points, you'll be able to get an extra goodie.

Even if you don't meet the minimum score, you'll still be able to win scratch cards with prizes including discount codes on the Google Store. There doesn't seem to be a limit on how many times you can play Huat Match in a day, but the button to play will disappear once you win a goodie.

But perhaps you're feeling that the above activities require too much effort (yes, we know). Then you're in luck too because Google Pay is also providing you with a free goodie as long as you can spot a special Huat Pal from previous years in the app. Keep your eyes open for them!

Lastly, by opening the Huat Pals interface in the Google Pay app once a day, you'll also be able to receive a goodie. It seems like Google is literally begging you to take the chance to win prizes.

Modern take of a classic game

If you grew up in an age when Nokia phones were common, you might fondly recall hours spent on the OG mobile game Snake. Well, Google has brought that game back and modernised it. On 29 January, the Snake game will be available to play on Google's Search homepage, with new game modes like Cheese Mode where you'll have to collect food items in a specific order, or Portal Mode, where you can teleport from one side of the field to the other.

There's no Huat Pals goodie associated with this game, so it's purely just for us oldies to drop hours yet again on this game.
