Global smartphone shipments for Q1 2016 is 1.3% lower than the year before
The latest report from market research and analysis firm TrendForce is another sign that global smartphone market growth is stagnating.
As predicted by IDC earlier this month, the global smartphone market has reached saturation. Market research and analysis firm TrendForce claims that worldwide smartphone shipments for Q1 2016 hit 292 million units. This is 18.6% lesser compared to the Q4 2015 and 1.3% lower from a year earlier.
TrendForce attributed the drop in shipments to market saturation with major brands such as Apple and Samsung losing their growth momentum. Overall shipments are now dependent on China-based brands and increasing demand in emerging markets. Here are some figures highlighted in the report:
- China-based brands shipped 125 million units, which surpassed the combined numbers of Apple and Samsung for the first time.
- Apple shipped 42 million iPhones, which is a huge drop of 43.8% from the previous quarter.
- Samsung shipped 81 million phones, which is an increase of 2.5% from the previous quarter.
- Huawei's shipment dropped 20% to 27 million units.
- Lenovo and Xiaomi shipped 17 and 16 million phones respectively.
For the rest of 2016, TrendForce predicts that Apple will ship 213 million units while Samsung is projected to ship 316 million phones. Apple reportedly cut production for the current quarter in response to sluggish sales of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.
