ARM and GlobalFoundries to Collaborate on 20nm SoC Featuring FinFET Technology

ARM and GlobalFoundries have announced their collaboration to produce system-on-chip (SoC) solutions based on the latter's 20-nanometer (nm) fabrication process and FinFET transistors. This will help achieve better system performance and power-efficiency for a range of mobile applications.

ARM and GlobalFoundries have announced their collaboration to produce system-on-chip (SoC) solutions based on the latter's 20-nanometer (nm) fabrication process and FinFET transistors. This will help achieve better system performance and power-efficiency for a range of mobile applications, from smartphones to tablets to ultra-thin notebooks.

The two companies have been collaborating for a number of years to jointly optimize the ARM Cortex-A Series processors. With their current engagement, they wish to capitalize on their prior efforts by driving production IP (Intellectual Property) platforms that will enable customer designs on Globalfoundries' 20nm-LPM, and at the same time, promote rapid migration to FinFET transistor technology for these designs. Both companies' efforts will enable faster delivery of SoC solutions to customers using these next-generation ARM processors and GPUs in a wide range of mobile applications.

It was not stated when the commercial introduction of these new SoC solutions will occur; however, this joint announcement by ARM and GlobalFoundries comes just after the former announced a similar working partnership with TSMC that covered 64-bit ARM processors featuring FinFET transistors as well.
