Apple's in-house power management chip could arrive earlier than expected

Apple is reportedly developing its own power management chips for the iPhone and they could arrive sooner than expected.

Apple's in-house power management chip for the iPhone could arrive as early as next year.

Industry sources told Nikkei Asian Review that Apple plans to reduce its reliance on Dialog semiconductor and bring its own power management chips to the iPhone as early as 2018. Another source confirmed that Apple is indeed developing its own power management chip, but the release time frame could be delayed to 2019.

"Based on Apple's current plan, they are set to replace partially, or around half of its power management chips to go into iPhones by itself starting next year," said the source.

The sources added that Apple's power management chips would be the most advanced in the industry and could have processing capabilities to better track and control power consumption among the different components. If this is true, consumers can look forward to iPhones with longer battery life and lower power consumption.

Reuters reported earlier in April that Apple is working on its own battery-saving chip for the iPhone.  Apple was reportedly poaching Dialog's engineers in Munich to join its team.
