We are just months away from the iPhone 15 and the rumour of the iPhone 15 Pro Max featuring a periscope lens for better optical zoom is gaining steam.
The leaker @URedditor is said to have received "independent confirmation" that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will indeed have a camera with a periscope lens.
Though this rumour has been making rounds since last year and has also been echoed by noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the fact that multiple sources confirmed it lends it further credence.
Furthermore, it is a feature that has been present on flagship Android phones for the past couple of years. Most recently, Google's Pixel 7 Pro and Samsung's Galaxy S23 Ultra both have telephoto cameras with periscope lenses.
In a nutshell, a periscope lens increases the distance between the elements in a camera so that the camera may have a greater optical zoom. It is this type of lens that allows flagship Android phones to have between 5x and 10x optical zoom while iPhones are stuck at just 3x.
With a periscope lens, it should theoretically greatly improve the iPhone's telephoto photo-taking abilities.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max is widely expected to be unveiled sometime later this year in September.
