The upcoming 6.1-inch LCD iPhone could use the same display panel as the recently announced LG G7 ThinQ smartphone.
Supply chain sources told Business Korea that Apple is expected to equip the 6.1-inch iPhone model with an MLCD+ display. The new M+ panel will be brighter and consume less power than the conventional IPS LCD display.
Based on information provided by DisplayBlog, M+ is LG Display's sub-pixel panel technology which uses four sub-pixels (red, green, blue, white) rather than three (red, green, blue). The addition of a white sub-pixel enhances the light transmittance rate to 8% and leads to lower backlight costs as the number of LED and/or optical films are reduced. Moreover, the white sub-pixels make the screen brighter without actually consuming more power.
It does make some sense for Apple to adopt the new MLCD+ display since the 6.1-inch iPhone is rumored to be the most affordable of the three models coming this year.
