Could Samsung unveil a tri-fold phone at next week’s Galaxy Unpacked event?

Code in OneUI 8 suggests that it might.

Samsung’s rumoured tri-fold foldable phone might have been revealed in the latest OneUI 8 build.

Android Authority discovered in One UI8 animations of how the upcoming foldable phone would look. When fully unfolded, you will find the triple-camera setup on the left-most rear panel. The middle panel with the punch-hole camera in the centre is likely the cover display, while the right-most panel might not be a display as it does not seem to have bezels.

So, how does Samsung’s tri-fold foldable phone work? A closer look reveals two inward-folding hinges of different sizes, indicating that they must fold in a specific sequence.

The right-most panel (from the first photo) is likely folded first, followed by the left-most panel (the one with the rear cameras). Folding them in the reverse order would prevent the device from closing flat due to the protruding camera modules. In fact, Samsung includes an animation warning users against folding it the wrong way.

The tri-fold foldable phone is referred to within OneUI 8 as “Multifold 7”, which is likely an internal codename and not its marketing name.

A rumour in January claims that the tri-fold foldable phone could be called the Galaxy G Fold. This name could be related to the G-shaped folding mechanism of the device, which is different from the S-shaped folding mechanism deployed in the Huawei Mate XT.

Samsung is holding its Galaxy Unpacked event on 9 July to unveil the next-generation foldable phones, smartwatches, and wireless earbuds. OneUI 8 will also debut at the event on the foldable phones. Read our feature article on what to expect at the 9 July event.
