Does Adobe’s latest Photoshop feature mean the end for professional retouchers?
Adobe has just posted a sneak peek at an upcoming addition to Photoshop CC, and it looks to be incredibly powerful.
If you’ve ever tried to any sort of image retouching or photo composites, you’ll know that the masking is one of the most crucial skills to master. But it’s also one of the most difficult and time-consuming ones. That looks to change soon though, as Adobe just teased a look at a new feature for Photoshop CC – Select Subject – that uses machine learning via Adobe Sensei to determine what to mask and what to keep.
Get a usable starting selection with just a single click! The best part? The feature will work with multiple subjects too, so if you have a group of people playing volleyball like in the picture below, it will work just as well.
Select Subject will be available within the Select and Mask workspace too, so you’ll be able to further refine any masks you’ve already created. “With Select Subject, you’ll be able to get started with your selections faster than ever before,” Adobe says.
There’s no date as to when the feature will be officially released in a Photoshop CC update, as Adobe simply says it “will be available in an upcoming release”. However, this is probably a strong sign to show that the long-standing industry standard for imaging editing software isn’t going to concede its status to newcomers like Luminar and Affinity Photo anytime soon.
