We are still only in the early parts of 2024 and there are already plenty of excitements for photographers with the launch of Fujifilm’s highly anticipated X100VI (which, to nobody’s surprise, was promptly sold out even before launch) as well as Leica’s $10,400 full-frame mirrorless SL3 camera.
Then just last evening, Leica also announced a limited run of a special edition of the coveted Summilux-M 35mm F1.4 lenses in black.

Leica’s approach to limited production runs isn't new, yet whenever it makes one, we all sit up and listen. The limited-edition series of just 200 units of Summilux-M 35mm F1.4 lenses, adorned in an anodized black finish isn't just any lens; it's a nod to the '60s, revived for the modern era and labelled by Leica as the undisputed "true king of bokeh".
Reintroduced in 2022 as part of the Leica Classic line, this lens has seen a transformation. Beyond the colour change, its design tweaks – such as the inversion of distance scales and the metric markers' repositioning – echo the original's charm while catering to the contemporary photographer's sensibilities. Instead of the usual “Leica” brand engraving, the lens gets a nod to history with "Leitz Wetzlar" engraved on the front – a tribute to its origins.

For devoted Leica collectors, this piece is a chance not only to own an awesome prime lens but also a slice of history. Apparently, only 200 of the original 35mm F1.4 (not to be mistaken with the ‘reintroduced’ model) was made. Naturally, the price tag is not for the faint-hearted too with the Summilux-M 35mm F1.4 Special Edition going for $15,300 (against the standard version’s $8,660).
