The popularity of cameras like the Fujifilm X100VI and Leica Q3 is proof that there’s demand for high-resolution, premium compact cameras.
To that end, Fujifilm has just announced its latest premium compact camera, the GFX100RF. Available in black and silver, the GFX100RF has a vintage-inspired aesthetic that is unmistakably Fujifilm.
Longtime Fujifilm fans will know that the GFX name means this camera has a medium format sensor. Indeed, inside the GFX100RF is a 102-megapixel medium format sensor – the same found in the company’s medium format cameras like the GFX100 II and GFX100S II. The image processor is the X-Processor 5.

This is paired with a 35mm f/4 fixed lens, which, in full-frame equivalent would mean a focal length of 28mm. Interestingly, that’s the same as the Leica Q3.
To keep the camera as compact as possible, the GFX100RF uses a leaf shutter system. The leaf shutter also offers other benefits. Not only is it very quiet, but it also introduces less shutter shake, which is critical because the GFX100RF does not have any form of image stabilisation. No IBIS, no OIS. Consequently, lighting and technique are crucial to nailing crisp shots in challenging conditions.
According to Fujifilm, compactness was a priority when designing the GFX100RF. It weighs 735g, which, is lighter than the GFX 50R (body only, 775g) and lighter than an X-T5 with an XF16-50mm F2.8-4.8 lens (797g). This is impressive in the context of a camera with a medium format sensor.

Thanks to the large high-resolution sensor, the GFX100RF has some interesting features that make shooting more fun. To start, it has a new control dial that lets users quickly choose between nine aspect ratios. This gives users different framing perspectives and saves them the trouble of having to go into the camera settings menu to change it.
The high-resolution sensor also enables the GFX100RF to have a digital teleconverter function (aka digital zoom), allowing the camera to simulate 36mm, 50mm, and 63mm full-frame equivalent focal lengths.
Being a Fujifilm camera, the GFX100RF comes with 20 film simulation modes, which include favourites like Reala Ace, Classic Neg., Classic Chrome, and more.

Elsewhere, the GFX100RF has a 5.76-million dot EVF that has a magnification of 0.84x and a 3.15-inch 2.1-million dot rear LCD display. It has dual SD card slots and supports SDXC cards of up to 2TB. It uses the NP-W235 battery, which Fujifilm says is good for around 820 shots.
Many Fujifilm fans have been begging the company to make a compact fixed-lens camera with a medium format sensor and that time has finally come. Though the price is high and the advantages of a medium format sensor are debatable, there’s no question that the GFX100RF is a unique proposition in the world of digital photography and could introduce medium format photography to a wider audience. More importantly, for anyone willing to spend close to five digits for a compact camera, it’s an interesting alternative to the Leica Q3.
