Zepp Health announced their brand-new smartwatch for the great outdoors in the form of the new Amazfit T-Rex 3 smartwatch at the recent IFA 2024 in Berlin.
They’ve also been on a bit of a roll of late by announcing their new status as the Official Wearable and Timekeeping partner of the HYROX World Series of Fitness Racing just a few days earlier. It’s quite clear that Amazfit is clearly focused on making a statement around their focus on fitness.
Yes, they started out with a bit of a reputation for making cheap fitness trackers, but on the surface at least, the new T-Rex 3 is probably the closest the company has been in potentially giving competitors like Garmin a reason to look closer in the rear-view mirror.
The T-Rex 3 is built to take just about anything the great outdoors can throw at it, thanks to military-grade durability that Amazfit claims lets the watch be able to withstand extreme conditions in outdoor environments.
Outdoor navigation features include an enlarged 1.5" AMOLED display that can reach up to 2,000 nits peak brightness, making it incredibly easy to read maps on your wrist, or even workout data under any lighting. The device comes with up to 27 days of battery life with typical use, or even up to 180 hours when using GPS to track a couple of days’ worth of hiking.
Some other notable product features of the T-Rex 3 include:
- Design: The AMOLED display is 16% larger and 100% brighter than the previous generation, while the body is upgraded with a stainless-steel bezel.
- Software: Free offline maps and contour maps with turn directions, plus more health features like readiness and heart rate variability.
- Sports: Over 170 workout modes including the new Hyrox Race mode, Freediving, Ultramarathon, and an upgraded Strength Training mode.
- Battery Life: Up to 27 days with typical usage, or up to 180 hours of maximum GPS usage.
- Privacy: Enhanced privacy protection measures, including options for GPS discretion.
It is also interesting that Zepp Health calls out the T-Rex 3 as having the first smartwatch OS to come with integrated AI – an AI assistant powered by OpenAI's GPT-4o technology. From the product page, this appears to allow users to control the T-Rex 3 with their voice, send speech-to-text message replies, and get training recommendations. How well this works, and how effective the AI integration is done, are questions that we don’t have answers for, but hopefully something that a forthcoming review might bring clarity to.
In addition, the T-Rex 3 also provides users with complete control over all data that the smartwatch generates throughout day-to-day use. Users can choose from permanent cloud storage of GPS data, temporary cloud storage, no cloud upload, or even disabling GPS permissions entirely. Zepp Health has multiple options for data backup with the T-Rex 3 – this includes automatic email backup, automatic cloud backup, local backup to mobile systems, and the ability to export sports data files.
It must also be pointed out that Zepp Health is clearly taking some cues from Samsung, as the T-Rex 3 is marketed as being compatible with the Amazfit Helio Smart Ring, thus forming a health monitoring ecosystem much like how Samsung’s Galaxy Ring works together with their Galaxy Watch to offer a more seamless and accurate health analysis from a wider range of data by wearing both together. The integration between the T-Rex 3 smartwatch and the Helio Smart Ring enables round-the-clock tracking of key health metrics such as HRV, resting heart rate, and skin temperature, analyzed together for a holistic view of the user’s health and fitness readiness.
