Honda has finally reclaimed the title of fastest front-wheel drive production car around the famous Nürburgring circuit.
Honda's new Civic Type R went around the Nüburgring in 7 minutes 43.8 seconds, beating the previous record - held by the Volkswagen Golf GTI Clubsport S - by a good 3.38 seconds.
The new Civic Type R, in case you have already forgotten, was first unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year and it is based on the new Civic.

The latest new Type R is powered by a 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 316hp and 400nm of torque. Compared to the previous Civic Type R, this new model has more power, a stiffer chassis, a wider track, improved suspension, and a lower stance.
A point of contention in this record-breaking attempt is that the car used has a roll-cage installed for "safety reasons" and that the rear seats and infotainment system were removed to compensate for the extra weight of the roll-cage. Honda insists that the roll-cage, and I quote, "did not provide any additional rigidity to the body frame." Right.
If it helps, the car was running on road-legal, but track-focused tires.
I bet everyone is wondering what the outcome would be like if Honda had used a bone stock car instead. Volkswagen certainly will be.
