Sony and Honda’s electric car is now a reality. At a press conference at CES earlier today, Sony Honda Mobility announced that the Afeela 1 is now available for customers to pre-order.
The Afeela 1 is an electric saloon that’s roughly the length of a Mercedes E-Class. It has dual motors, one on each axle, offering a combined power output of 482hp. The battery capacity is 91kWh and the estimated range is up to 300 miles (482km).
With over 40 sensors and a claimed 800 TOPS of computing power, the Afeela 1 will offer Level 2+ driver assist. However, it seems these features will require a subscription to enable.
Speaking of which, prices will start at US$89,900 (S$122,563) for the Origin trim and go up to US$102,900 (S$140,286) for the Signature trim that comes with larger wheels, more colour choices, and a rear entertainment system.
Prices include a three-year subscription to the abovementioned Level 2+ driver assist and the Afeela AI personal agent. Deliveries for the Signature models will start in “Mid 2026”, whereas customers ordering the Origin models should expect their cars to be ready in 2027.
Before you get too excited and whip out your chequebooks, there is a catch. Pre-orders are only open to buyers living in California at the moment. Sadly, Sony Honda Mobility did not mention if it will be available outside of California, or in other countries.
Sony’s EV has been a long time coming. At CES 2020, it unveiled a concept car called the Vision-S (remember that?). And in 2022, it followed up with the Vision-S 02 SUV and said it plans to enter the EV market. That plan has finally come full circle with the Afeela 1. If reception to the Afeela 1 is good, don’t be surprised to see an Afeela SUV at next year’s CES.
