Although Apple Music has reportedly surpassed Spotify in U.S subscriber count, it is still lagging behind badly in global paid subscriber count.
According to Reuters, Spotify's paid subscriber count rose 10% to a total of 83 million at the end of June. This is more than double Apple's last-reported 40 million paying subscribers. For the current quarter, Spotify expects to increase its paid subscriber count to between 85 million and 88 million.
Despite the surge in subscriber growth over the years, Spotify is still making a loss in its music streaming business. Its average monthly revenue per user dipped 12% year on year due to family and student plans, as well as rapid growth in emerging markets where subscription fees are lower.
