Samsung just announced the expansion of global availability for the sleep apnea feature on its Galaxy Watch series.
Following recent approvals by health authorities in several countries, Samsung will roll out the sleep apnea feature to 36 countries, including Singapore and Australia. This brings the global total to 70 countries where the feature is supported.
The sleep apnea feature is supported on the Galaxy Watch4 series and later models running Wear OS 5.0 or later, and must be paired with a Galaxy smartphone running Android 12.0 or later.
Samsung states that the sleep apnea feature utilizes the BioActive Sensor to measure blood oxygen saturation (SpO₂) during sleep. It monitors changes in SpO₂ levels related to apnea and hypopnea patterns and estimates the Apnea-Hypopnea Index to inform users of potential symptoms.
Additionally, it is intended to detect signs of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, marked by significant breathing disruptions, in adults aged 22 and over, monitored over two nights.
A similar feature was made available on the Apple Watch Series 10, Apple Watch Ultra 2, and Apple Watch Series 9 in September 2024.
The Apple Watch relies on its accelerometer to track breathing disturbances during sleep and categorise them as "elevated or "not elevated". If "Elevated" breathing disturbances are consistently experienced over a 30-day evaluation period, a notification will prompt the user to possible sleep apnea. The sleep apnea notification is intended for people 18 years old or older.
