Microsoft is likely not alone in the race to acquire TikTok.
People briefed about the matter told The Financial Times that Oracle had held preliminary talks with ByteDance to acquire TikTok. Oracle was also said to be interested to buy TikTok's operations in the Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The sources added that Oracle has a strategic advantage over Microsoft as its partners such as General Atlantic and Sequoia Capital already have stakes in ByteDance. Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison is also an open supporter of U.S President Trump, who may be more inclined to support the company's bid for TikTok. Days ago, Trump issued a new executive order to force ByteDance to sell U.S TikTok operations within 90 days.
So far, Microsoft has officially confirmed that it is interested to acquire TikTok's U.S operations. The Financial Times reported more than a weeka go that Microsoft is considering to buy TikTok's global business. The Wall Street Journal claimed last week that Twitter had preliminary talks about a potential acquisition of TikTok.
