Apple's discussions with Tencent and ByteDance are said to be "at a very early stage".
The rollout of Apple Intelligence in China does not seem to be happening anytime soon, as the company is said to be in early discussions with two Chinese companies.
According to Reuters, Apple is in talks with Tencent and ByteDance to integrate their AI models (Hunyuan and Doubao) into iPhones sold in China. Partnering with a local company is necessary because ChatGPT is currently unavailable in China.
If a partnership agreement is reached, it would be a significant advancement for Apple in China's highly competitive AI space.
In March 2024, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple held preliminary talks with Baidu to use the latter's AI model to power some Apple Intelligence features. However, talks appear to have stalled due to technical issues and Apple's refusal to let Baidu train its AI model with iPhone users' data.
