Apple’s AI ambitions appear to encountered yet another setback with a possible shift in strategy.

Bloomberg reports that Apple could abandon its in-house AI models in favour of a third-party solution to power its next-generation Siri.

According to the report, Apple is said to have approached Anthropic and OpenAI to explore the possibility of running their AI models on its Private Cloud Compute (PCC) platform.

Introduced in 2024, PCC is Apple’s proprietary cloud intelligence system designed for private AI processing. It currently power some Apple Intelligence features, which you can read more in this article.

Talks with Anthropic have reportedly stalled over disagreements on “preliminary financial terms”, leading Apple to consider OpenAI or another third-party provider. While these discussions are progressing, Apple continues to work on its own AI model (dubbed LLM Siri).

The road to AI for Apple has been anything but easy. Earlier this year, Apple had to postpone the launch of its “more personalised Siri”, citing slower-than-expected development progress.

The company also reorganised the Siri team after CEO Tim Cook lost confidence in AI head John Giannandrea’s ability to execute on product development.

Bloomberg then published a detailed report last month on why Apple is failing at AI, highlighting early skepticism among senior executives about AI and chatbots.
