Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., better known by our readers as TSMC, said it must delay 4nm chipset mass production in Arizona to 2025.

According to Nikkei Asia, TSMC said that the shortage of skilled workers and expertise for equipment installation has led to the projected delay. The original timeline was to start the N4 process technology’s schedule by 2024. N4 refers to the nodes for TSMC’s 4nm chipmaking technology.

The chipmaker has customers like Apple, Qualcomm, and NVIDIA, where these companies rely on TSMC’s high-end chips for their processors in consumer and enterprise products. For example, Nikkei Asia said that NVIDIA solely uses TSMC for NVIDIA's H100 data centre GPUs, which also uses 4nm process technology. Apple also previously announced that it’s sourcing chips from TSMC’s Arizona plant (although TSMC has multiple existing and upcoming chipmaking plants).

According to GSMArena, TSMC has another 3nm chipset plant in the works, after meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden and Apple CEO Tim Cook for a further US$40 billion investment into these technologies.
