Stagefright continues to spread fear on Android devices

When news broke of the Stagefright exploit for Android late last month, it got everybody riled up. A few days after the news broke, Google issued patches meant to fix the issues. Case closed, right? No more Stagefright? Not really.

Just when you thought it was safe, Stagefright is back. To be precise, it never truly left.

When we reported on Stagefright late last month, we didn't really think we'd be talking about it this far into the next month. After all, we believed it when Google said that they were taking Android security seriously and were stepping up security measures in the OS.

True, Google did send out patches that supposedly fixed the exploits that Stagefright utilized. However, researchers from Exodus Intelligence found out that's not the case, as the patches themselves were faulty and didn't really fix the issue in the first place.

The researchers have offered their solution to the faulty patch but it seems like Google's not taking them up on their offer. According to them, Google's still distributing the faulty patch and even though their submission's been acknowledged by Google, nothing has been done so far to rectify the problem on Google's end.

It seems like until Google fixes their old patch with yet another patch, nothing's changed about Stagefright, in that pretty much every Android device on the planet (barring some exceptions) are still susceptible to it.
