Charge up while you dine at McDonald's new Marine Cove restaurant
McDonald's is back at East Coast Park and the new Marine Cove restaurant packs a fresh dining experience along with some interesting tech upgrades like wireless charging built onto the tables and getting into some light VR fun using Google Cardboard to experience the store's unique offerings.

As one iconic location closes today, another is opening on 2nd July after three years of redevelopment as the McDonald’s Marine Cove restaurant returns to delight East Coast Park users at 1000 East Coast Parkway.
This outlet has a large seating capacity internally and externally. This is also why you’ll notice some automated ordering kiosks are placed outside; there are more inside as well.
Notice that a new generation of automated ordering machines is used in this outlet – it’s noticeably more compact and sleeker than earlier iterations you would have used in other outlets. Yea, we’re geeky like that.
Of course, you’ve the traditional ordering counters and a dedicated collection counters too. Even here, there’s been a new addition; head to the next photo.
You’ll now find a dedicated counter for those who’ve used the automated ordering kiosk and have opted to pay for their meal via cash. Efficiency is everything in this new outlet.
The airy and spacious ambience of the new Marine Cover McDonald’s is quite unlike other outlets and it gels well with the location’s laid back feel.
While there are a number of reasons to check out this new outlet, what piqued our interest is the incorporation of wireless charging capability on some of the dining tables – a first for a McDonald’s outlet in Singapore.
Aircharge is the provider of this solution and it’s essentially a wireless surface charger that conforms to the Qi wireless charging standard. So any device that supports this standard, like the Samsung Galaxy S7, can be charged wirelessly.
Seen here, as soon as I placed a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge on the the surface wireless charger, the phone indicated the commencement of the charging cycle. Neat!
(If you are wondering, that isn’t my PINK Galaxy S7 Edge, but if you like it, you can read more about it here.)
But what if you’ve an iPhone or other devices that don’t support wireless charging? Every wireless charging station is also equipped with a wireless charging receiver with these three interfaces:- micro-USB, Lightning and legacy iPhone charging connector. So just plug in the appropriate connector to your phone and place the charging receiver on the wireless charging plate to commence charging.
It's however missing a USB Type-C port , but McDonald's is aware of this gap and will be looking to update it in the near future.
If you recall, we mentioned that only some of the tables are equipped with these charging stations, but exactly how many are there?
There are actually 30 wireless charging stations in all, so that’s a pretty healthy figure. Let’s hope consumers don’t abuse them or needlessly hog them. Be gracious please.
Another first for McDonald’s in Singapore is a salad bar that goes hand in hand with the drive for a healthy lifestyle. More so for an outlet that’s situated at the popular sporting and activity grounds of East Coast Park.
What you do is choose from the Salad Base – Asian salad with roasted sesame dressing ($5.50), Caesar salad ($5.50), Classic Green salad ($3.90) – and then add a dressing of your choice (60 cents per serve), followed by toppings of your choice (60 cents per serve). There are a few premium toppings like avocado that will cost you $1.20 per serve though. Our suggestion? Choose the Classic Green and customize as you need.
Outside, you’ll find alfresco dining and another first in Singapore – a Dessert bar that allows you to customize your desserts from 17 different toppings!
Then add toppings! Most toppings are 70 cents per serve, but there are premium ones that will cost $1.20 each.
Did you know you can actually specify how you want your fries done? Such as extra salty or no salt at all, and they will make a batch of fries to your needs.
Microsoft Windows is promptly reminding McDonald’s to activate the OS. To give them the benefit of doubt, the store will only open for business on 2nd July, so they’ve a few more days to address this.
Besides the salad and desert bars, there are a couple of new sandwiches that are exclusive to this new outlet such as Cheesy Mushroom shown here that's under the McCafe side of offerings.
Speaking of McCafe, don't forget that you get $2 off purchases ($6 minimum) when you pay with Android Pay!
Unlike the Create Your Taste campaign that's adopted in some of the current stores to create your personalized burger, McDonald's chose to study the ordering pattern from the previous outlets (yes, that's big data at work) to offer a fixed set of 3 premium burgers (Classic Cheese, Spicy Tortilla, Spicy Chicken with Apple Slaw) in this new outlet. So you can't create your own burger nor get it served to you in this new outlet.
To sum up, this 8,439 square feet family joint features its first salad and dessert bar in Singapore, premium burgers, new sandwiches, along with family-friendly amenities such as wireless charging stations, an area to park prams, and a shadow wall for children.
