MSI’s GS75 Stealth is the world’s first 17-inch thin and light gaming notebook with GeForce RTX 2080

What’s the world’s first 17-inch thin and light gaming notebook made of? We check out the MSI GS75 Stealth up-close in this article.

MSI’s GS65 Stealth Thin from 2018 made good headway in the portable gaming notebook scene and might have even edged other brands to dish out their versions of thin and light 15-inch gaming notebooks.

While everyone’s still fixated on the 15-inch playing field, MSI brought all the GS65 goodness into a 17-inch form factor, thus making the new GS75 Stealth the world’s first thin and light gaming notebook to also sport a GeForce GTX 2080 GPU with Max-Q design. Weighs just 2.25kg light and measures 396 x 259 x 19mm.

MSI says the GS75 Stealth Thin sports a four-sided slim bezel design that’s just 5.2mm thin. While the bezels are slim, even the bottom one, it’s not quite the same as the other three sides without the hinge so we’re not quite sure how they’ve deduced this marketing. Nevertheless, the bezels are slim enough that we’re not bothered by it.

While the GeForce RTX 2080 now boasts a TDP 10W lower than the GTX 1080, advances in the Turing architecture help it yield roughly 20% performance boost over its predecessor. This means it’s both more powerful and power efficient. Even so, the maximum spec that the GS65 Stealth could boast last year was a GeForce GTX 1070 Max-Q design. This year, both the updated GS65 Stealth and GS75 Stealth can be fit a GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q design thanks to the updated Cooler Boost Trinity+ cooling system that has increased the number of heatpipes from four to seven – thus earning the “+” tag for the new cooling system.

In terms of connectivity, it’s quite like the GS65 Stealth Thin, but the new GS75 Stealth now comes with an additional USB Type-C port (USB 3.1 Gen 1), in addition to the other Type-C port that’s Thunderbolt 3 certified.

The keyboard typing experience is identical to the GS65 Stealth Thin, which is to say commendable, and as can be seen, it features per-key RGB backlighting support. The touchpad has been overhauled for both the updated GS65 Stealth and the new GS75 Stealth with an extra large glass-like surface that offers much better responsiveness and feel. To be precise, MSI made it 35% larger than last year’s offerings and added over 10 multi-finger gesture controls.

You would think audio is likely to be ho-hum for such thin and light notebooks, but MSI has made improvements even here on the GS75 Stealth Thin in four key areas - It is a high-res audio capable, has a 50% boost amplitude, equating to a 10dbA volume increase, uses speakers designed in collaboration with Dyneaudio, and most importantly, it has incorporated passive radiator speaker design to help improve low to mid-range frequency reproduction.

The GS75 Stealth has also been designed with upgrades in mind, such as being able to take in up to three M.2 SSD drives!

To aid upgrading, the bottom panel is designed with easy internal access in mind.

Once you get the bottom lid off, you will see the three storage installation points surrounding the large battery.

Speaking about the battery and charging it, the excellent portability of the notebook is further improved with an updated power brick that’s much more compact than normal. Seen here is the new power brick on the left, and the older one on the right.

Not a notebook feature, but an MSI exclusive is the recently launched MSI App Player that helps you emulate and run your mobile phone games on your notebook. Run your favorite mobile game comfortably with your notebook's large screen and run it faster too.

Pricing and details for local launch will soon be known, but worldwide, the MSI GS75 Stealth is officially ready to launch by 29th January.
