I sure hope you like superhero movies, because you’re about to get a lot of them.
Warner Bros. has announced plans to expand its DC Films line beginning in 2022. The plan is to release four films a year in theaters, an additional two exclusively on their HBO Max streaming service and more television spin-offs in the future.
The DC Films line has always had room for aggressive expansion, but these are still some pretty big plans. DC Films president Walter Hamada talked to the New York Times about the studio’s new strategy, saying, “With every movie that we’re looking at now, we are thinking, ‘What’s the potential Max spinoff?’” Thus, we could see smaller movies and TV shows based on successful franchises like Aquaman and Wonder Woman hit HBO Max in the future.
Warner Bros. has already announced a couple of these spin-offs. A police drama spin-off of The Batman is coming to HBO Max in 2021, examining the innate corruption of Gotham City. A Suicide Squad spin-off series called Peacemaker is also coming to HBO Max, potentially in 2022. A Justice League Dark series is also in the works, as well as an Aquaman animated miniseries, untitled Green Lantern Series, Strange Adventures adaptation and a comedy series called DC Super Hero High.
As for DC movies, there are a metric ton in the works for 2021 and beyond. James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will release in 2021, followed by Robert Pattinson’s version of The Batman in 2022. After that, The Flash is planned for 2022 adapting DC Comics’ Flashpoint storyline, with both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton donning their Batsuits again. Aquaman 2 is also on the way, as well as a Shazam sequel titled Shazam: Fury of the Gods. A Black Adam movie starring Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is in pre-production, with plans to introduce the Justice Society.
Tons of other DC movies are resting in the planning stages, such as a Green Lantern Corps movie, Static Shock, Nightwing, Batgirl, the New Gods, Supergirl and even Wonder Woman 3, which has already been greenlit for production. Marvel Studios has an equal amount of projects in development, having dropped their massive plans for 2021 and beyond during an Investors Day conference. On Disney+ alone, we’re getting six Marvel Studios TV series in 2021.
So, yeah. It's going to be a good couple of years for comicbook fans!
