July is well on the way, and with it comes a whole new slate of TV shows and movies on various streaming services. Although most lockdowns have at least been partially lifted by now, we still have to spend our weekends doing something - so why not binge a couple shows? July might not be so jam-packed with goodness as the past few months, but there are still a few choice shows to look out for!
Unsolved Mysteries (July 1) - Netflix

Unsolved Mysteries is getting a reboot! The docuseries will continue to cover bone-chilling cold cases and paranormal occurrences, but on Netflix this time. The show will also lean heavily on a documentary format this season, opting to forgo a host. The original creators have returned for 12 new episodes, but the last six will be released at a later date.
Warrior Nun (July 2) - Netflix

Awful title aside, this show actually looks pretty good. Warrior Nun follows a 19-year-old woman who wakes up in a morgue with strange new powers and an artifact in her back. Soon enough, she discovers that she has become part of an ancient order of warrior nuns who fight off demons on Earth. She then has to juggle all her new demon-slaying responsibilities with typical teenage troubles, Buffy-style.
Ju-On: Origins (July 3) - Netflix

Ju-On has become a legendary horror franchise in its own right, and now it’s getting its own Netflix series. The horror series will follow a family living in a haunted house, trying to unravel the ghostly secrets of its past. Hopefully, it takes after the Japanese films and less after the American remakes.
Palm Springs (July 10) - Hulu

This is my personal highlight of the month! Palm Springs is a movie about two people who find themselves stuck in a timeloop, cursed with reliving the same day over and over again. Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti play plus-one Nyles and maid of honour Sarah, who are stuck in a Californian wedding. This movie has received an overwhelmingly positive reception from critics after a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. I mean, it’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Jake Peralta stuck in a timeloop - so I can see why.
Gordon Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back: Series 3 (July 13) - BBC Lifestyle/BBC Player

In the interest of genre diversity, here’s a cooking show! I’m a sucker of Gordon Ramsay giving restaurants a makeover, and that’s exactly what he does in this series. In a Hell on Wheels truck, the renowned chef is on a roadtrip across the United States to revive restaurants that teeter on the brink of disaster, within the short timeframe of 24 hours. The stakes are high!
Cursed (July 17) - Netflix

Missing The Witcher? Craving more Game of Thrones? Netflix’s Cursed is a reimagining of one of the most popular fantasy stories ever: the King Arthur mythos. This series dives into the backstory of the tragic Lady of the Lake - Nimue. Thrust into danger after a violent attack on her home, she journeys with the humble mercenary Arthur (yes, that one) to deliver an ancient sword to Merlin. We interviewed the cast and creators of Cursed, and boy did they have a lot to say about their upcoming show!
Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy (July 30) - Netflix

This animated Netflix series features the climactic final chapter in the Autobots and Decepticons’ massive civil war on Cybertron. If your entry point into the Transformers franchise were those Michael Bay movies, you probably remember that the first movie took place right after this war destroyed Cybertron. A lot more took place on that planet that can be summarised in one Peter Cullen-voiced monologue however, so hopefully this trilogy turns out well!
The Umbrella Academy: Season 2 (July 31) - Netflix

The Umbrella Academy follows seven adopted siblings with superpowers, all taken under the wing of an eccentric billionaire. Later in life, the dysfunctional family reunites for their father’s funeral, and subsequently learns of a coming apocalypse. The series is based on a Dark Horse comic written by Gerard Way - proving that the lead vocalist of My Chemical Romance is gifted with many talents. The show has proven to be an explosive hit worldwide, so it’s likely that Season 2 is going to be big!
