September has finally arrived, and it happens to be the most stacked month of new releases we have seen in a long time. Netflix, HBO, Amazon Prime and BBC are all putting out something worth watching this month - and almost none of them are skippable! From vigilantes hunting down superheroes to dinosaurs in summer camp, we’re pretty spoiled for choice here.

Raised by Wolves (September 3) - HBO Go

Raised by Wolves follows two androids, Father and Mother. The duo have a singular mission: to raise human children on a strange new planet after the destruction of Earth. They quickly learn that parenting isn’t quite as easy as it seems however, when the human colony begins to get torn apart due to religious differences. This series looks like an insane mix of horror, sci-fi and blockbuster-level production value.

Primates (September 3) - BBC Earth/BBC Player

Maybe you’re more into documentaries than horrifying cyborgs? Can’t blame you. BBC’s Primates focuses on the eponymous group of animals, which tend to be as thoughtful and caring as they are fearsome. The documentary goes over all kinds of animals within the primate group - from gigantic gorillas to little lemurs all around the world. The best part? No cyborgs.

The Boys Season 2 (September 4) - Amazon Prime Video

Prime Video’s smash hit dark comedy is back - and this time, the Boys are on the run. The so-called ‘heroes’ they spent an entire season hunting are onto them, and they don’t stand much of a chance in a fair fight. Homelander has just revealed a troubling truth to Billy Butcher, and will stop at nothing to tear the Boys apart. Plus, the Seven get a new member - Stormfront, who has flashy electrical powers.

Nothing’s going well for the Boys, I’m afraid.

I’m Thinking of Ending Things (September 4) - Netflix

Written and directed by Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), Netflix’s strange new movie follows a young woman having doubts about her relationship. During a snowstorm, she gets trapped in a farm with her boyfriend’s parents - which leads to some... really strange stuff. The trailer alone is a trip.

The Babysitter: Killer Queen (September 10) - Netflix

2017’s The Babysitter was a horror-comedy that has gone unappreciated for far too long. Sure, it’s not on the same level as Cabin in the Woods or Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil - but it was a lot better than it had any right to be. This sequel picks up protagonist Cole Johnson’s story, who finds himself facing down the same old killers while transitioning to high school.

Coastal Elites (September 12) - HBO

Ever since Covid-19 shut down most TV and movie productions around the globe, we’ve seen an explosion of remotely-shot stories. This HBO movie is one of them. Originally conceived as a play, Coastal Elites is a comedic satire that focuses on five characters who break down as they grapple with this insane year of politics, cultural strife and lockdowns. The cast is stacked, starring Bette Midler, Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Levy, Issa Rae and Sarah Paulson.

The Third Day (September 14) - HBO

https://www.youtube.com/embed/T43V6z9wYyE

This is a really interesting one. The Third Day is a miniseries that takes place over three interconnected stories. The first is titled Summer, and follows Sam (Jude Law) - a man who finds himself drawn to a strange island and its occupants. The second is called Autumn, consisting of one episode that’s filmed live and aired in one continuous take. The last part is called Winter, following a woman named Helen (Naomie Harris). She has come to the same island seeking answers, but triggers a battle for its fate instead.

We Are Who We Are (September 14) - HBO

https://www.youtube.com/embed/zslamAqw3BQ

This series comes from the acclaimed director of Call Me By Your Name. The show focuses on two American kids staying on a U.S. military base near Venice, Italy. It’s meant to be a coming of age series of sorts, focusing on all the good and bad that comes with being a teenager. Its trailer makes close to no sense, but hopefully the series is a little more cohesive.

The Devil All the Time (September 16) - Netflix

https://www.youtube.com/embed/EIzazUv2gtI

Talk about a stacked cast. This Netflix movie stars Tom Holland, Bill Skarsgård, Riley Keough, Robert Pattinson, Sebastian Stan and Mia Wasikowska - among others. Set in Knockemstiff, Ohio (which is somehow a real place), a whole bunch of sinister characters converge on a young man who struggles to defend himself and his family. One of them is Robert Pattinson playing ‘an unholy preacher’. Are you sold yet?

Dragon’s Dogma (September 17) - Netflix

https://www.youtube.com/embed/MASNtyXYZI8

Based on a cult classic game from Capcom, this anime series follows a man whose family gets murdered by a dragon. Naturally, he embarks on a quest to kill it. Dragon’s Dogma will be split up into seven episodes, with each focusing on one of the seven deadly sins. There is also a giant cyclops.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (September 18) - Netflix

https://www.youtube.com/embed/TKJwbsx1BSc

While Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard were fighting off dinosaurs in Jurassic World, a bunch of kids were on a really, really bad summer camp trip. With the adults either away or eaten, six teenagers are forced to watch their vacation turn into an all-out battle royale. This animated series might be geared more towards kids, but can you ever be too old for dinosaurs?

Enola Holmes (September 23) - Netflix

https://www.youtube.com/embed/1d0Zf9sXlHk

Millie Bobby Brown plays Enola Holmes, the third sibling in the most intelligent family in the world. In 1884 England, she wakes to find that her mother (Helena Bonham Carter) has vanished and sets out to solve the mystery of her disappearance. Her brothers, Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill) and Mycroft Holmes (Sam Claflin) intervene to send her off and make her a ‘proper’ young lady - but Enola won’t give up that easily.

Utopia (September 25) - Amazon Prime Video

https://www.youtube.com/embed/IDNPdLal2Lw

This remake of the British series of the same name follows a group of comicbook fans. Altogether obsessed with a comicbook series titled Utopia, the group begins to uncover hidden meanings and secrets hidden in its pages - which predict upcoming threats to humanity. These dangers are starting to come alive in their world, but what can they do about it?
