It’s been a while since the release of FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice back in 2019. A lot of things have happened since, but the game, set in Sengoku Japan, still retains its status as one of the best games to come out that year, having won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2019.

And now, Crunchyroll has announced that Sekiro will receive its own anime adaptation, titled Sekiro: No Defeat, which will be based off of the game’s story, featuring the protagonists Wolf and Kuro, and the conflict between the Interior Ministry and the Ashina clan. The trailer gives us a taste of the action we can expect, depicting an early duel between Wolf and Genichiro Ashina:

The two studios Qzil.la and ARCH set to animate and produce the show, respectively. They’re relatively low-profile names, with most of their experience coming from music videos, shorts and web animations, but Crunchyroll promises that a “masterful, fully hand-drawn adaptation.”

And the staff behind the anime are not new names by any means. Kenichi Kutsuna makes his directorial debut here, though he has a long history as a prolific key animator. Other staff members include art director Yuuji Kaneko (Kill la Kill, Ousama Ranking) and character designer Takahiro Kishida (Haikyuu!!), with Takuya Satou (Steins;Gate) in charge of the script.

The three main cast members of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Daisuke Namikawa (Wolf), Miyuki Satou (Kuro/The Divine Heir) and Kenjiro Tsuda (Genichiro Ashina) are also set to reprise their roles.

The anime will air exclusively on Crunchyroll worldwide (excluding Japan, China, South Korea, Russia and Belarus) in 2026.
