Disney+ loses 700,000 subscribers as customers baulk at price hikes

It seems customers don’t value Disney+ as much as Netflix.

The Walt Disney Company reported its first-quarter earnings and the numbers were mostly positive. The company beat Wall Street expectations and recorded increased revenue and profit.

However, one slightly alarming figure is the fall in Disney+ subscribers. Total paid Disney+ subscriptions currently stand at 124.6 million, a 700,000 decline from 125.3 million at the end of the previous quarter.

This comes after Disney announced that it would increase prices in August 2024. In Singapore, the price increases are as follows:

  • Disney+ Standard

    Monthly – From S$12.98 to S$15.98
    Annual – From S$129.98 to S$159.98

  • Disney+ Premium
    Monthly – From S$15.98 to S$18.98
    Annual – From S$159.98 to S$189.98

Prior to the August 2024 price hike, the previous time Disney+ increased prices in Singapore was in November 2023.

Usually, a 700,000 decline won’t be a big deal. Given Disney+’s huge subscriber base, 700,000 only represents a 0.56% dip. However, this is the first time Disney+ saw a dip in subscriber count.

What’s more stinging, perhaps, is that Netflix added over 19 million subscribers during the same period and that they, too, increased prices last year. One can start to see why the executives at Disney are quaking a little.

Furthermore, unlike Disney, which expects its subscriber count to fall for another quarter, Netflix is bullish and believes there is room for growth.
