How do you turn a streaming service around and make it profitable? A good place to start is to increase subscription prices.
Disney has just announced that it is increasing the prices of its suite of streaming services in the US. This includes Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+. Both ad-free and ad-supported plans will be impacted, with prices going up by US$1 and US$2.
This move comes after Disney started cracking down on password sharing earlier this year.
These are the new prices in the US:
- Disney+ With Ads - US$7.99 to US$9.99
- Disney+ Ad-Free - US$13.99 to US$15.99
- Hulu With Ads - US$7.99 to US$9.99
- Hulu Ad-Free - US$17.99 to US$18.99
- ESPN+ - US$10.99 to US$11.99
Although these price hikes only impact US viewers now, there’s a chance we will not be spared.
The last time Disney increased subscription prices in Singapore was late last year when it started introducing Standard and Premium subscription tiers.
Right now in Singapore, Disney+ Standard costs S$12.98 a month, whereas Disney+ Premium is S$15.98 a month. The Premium tier gives 4K video, Dolby Atmos sound, and the ability to stream to up to four devices simultaneously.
These prices are slightly lower than what Netflix charges, which increased prices in Singapore earlier this year. If I were Disney, I’d probably see this as an opportunity to adjust my prices. Netflix had a round of price hikes in Singapore just earlier this year.
