Plot twist!
World of Warcraft: Shadowlands’ publisher Blizzard Entertainment recently released an investor report, revealing that the MMORPG’s latest expansion has now become the fastest-selling PC game of all time. Shadowlands has hit 3.7 million sales on just its first day of release!

The expansion has dethroned the previous fastest-selling PC game to hold the title: Diablo 3, which sold 3.5 million copies on release day. Of course, that game is getting a sequel too - so this might just be a temporary win for the Warcraft franchise. It’s easy to see why the game has done so well, of course. The concept of visiting Azeroth’s version of the afterlife is enticing, and the expansion was also released on Warcraft’s 16th anniversary.
The report also noted that the game has reached and sustained its highest number of players on monthly or long-term subscriptions, compared to the period following any other expansion in the past decade. Total player time in-game this year has almost doubled compared to the same period in 2019, too. Seeing as the pandemic is likely keeping more people at home now, this boom in player activity makes a lot of sense.
More content is coming, of course. Shadowlands’ first season of content has begun, with the expansion’s first raid in Castle Nathria available in Normal and Heroic difficulties. Mythic Keystone dungeons have also become available. In Arenas and Battlegrounds, the expansion’s first rated PvP season has begun. Having played through the game’s new starting area, I can attest to the fact that there is no better time to start playing Warcraft than right now!
