Cyberpunk: Edgerunners gets a season 2, featuring an all-new cast and standalone story

It seems like David and Lucy’s story is well and truly done.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners fans were already doing pretty well this year, with the series getting a manga prequel earlier this year. But it looks like CD Projekt RED saved the biggest announcement for Anime Expo: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is getting a season 2, and it’s in production right now.

The announcement was made at a behind-the-scenes panel for Edgerunners at the convention, and was followed by a short teaser trailer that, to put it lightly, reminds you of some key moments from season 1:

The new 10-episode season, simply styled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II, will again be jointly produced by CD Projekt RED and Studio Trigger. Edgerunners II will also retain the first season’s showrunner, CD Projekt RED creative director Bartosz Sztybor. However, there are a few key changes within the production team.

This includes director Kai Ikarashi, who makes his directorial debut with this show, as well as Kanno Ichigo and Masahiko Otsuka, who will take charge of character design and the screenplay respectively. These are by no means new names within Studio Trigger, and all three have also worked on production for the first season, but it does seem that there’s an air of renewal around.

This is because Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II is going to be a standalone story, with a brand new cast of characters and a whole new story set in Night City. If you remember, the first season ended on a pretty definitive note for its cast (the trailer makes that incredibly clear in the first 20 seconds), but it looks like Edgerunners II will be following its predecessor in spirit, by expanding Cyberpunk’s universe with more original stories. Edgerunners’s original director, Hiroyuki Imaishi, noted in the panel that this will be a fresher take on the franchise by younger faces.

We’re not exactly sure what that story is going to be just yet, but the production team is eager to keep it as gritty as the first season, calling Edgerunners II a “raw chronicle in redemption and revenge”. Sztybor also stated during the panel that the new season is set to be “sadder... darker, more bloody and more raw”, if that’s any indication where the series is headed.

A poster for the upcoming season by character designer Ichigo was also unveiled:

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II is also set to release on Netflix. The only thing we’re missing now is a release date.
