You can now video call friends and family on WhatsApp

Users have been asking for this for a long time, and WhatsApp has finally acquiesced. The messaging service today announced a new video calling feature that will bring you face-to-face with friends and family on the app.

With the recent launch of the Google Duo video calling app, WhatsApp probably felt the need to up its game and take on the likes of Duo and FaceTime. While WhatsApp staggered its launch of voice calling last year across different platforms, it looks like the company is now pushing out the feature to all the major mobile operating systems at once.

It works much the same as existing voice calls – all you have to do is tap the call icon in a chat window and select video call.

That said, WhatsApp will gradually roll out the feature to its more than one billion users across Android, iOS, and Windows in the coming days, so don’t be surprised if you don’t see it yet.

Google Duo should be worried. It was a bold play in a crowded space, but now that the world’s most popular messaging app now offers voice calling, Duo has to fight even harder to be the app of choice for users.
