This year's flagship iPhone could cost more than the iPhone X

Better start saving now if you are planning to get the flagship iPhone model later this year.

Based on the average sales prices of the iPhone, UBS analysts Steven Milunovich and Benjamin Wilson predict that Apple could raise the price of this year's flagship model to US$1,100. The current iPhone X is priced at US$999.

The analysts believe it is part of Apple's three-pronged strategy to encourage repeat customers to pay more for new products while offering affordable products for first-time customers:

  • "Cascade top-of-the-line features down the price curve (screen size, camera, etc)"
  • "Move premium customers up the price curve with moderately higher prices"
  • "Establish higher price bands based on new features while tapping into lower-end markets with older devices"

UBS' prediction differs from that of RBC Capital Markets; the latter shared the retail prices of the 2018 iPhone lineup where the next generation iPhone X will see a price cut to US$899 and the new Plus-sized iPhone X variant with a base price of US$999.
