A smart monitor that wants to be a TV for your desk

The Samsung Smart Monitor

Some of us have wished for our monitors to be a little 'smarter' - for whatever reasons. Well, Samsung have heard your pleas when they announced their Smart Monitor series a little while back.

Samsung's Smart Monitor combines OTT (over-the-top) media service, mobile connectivity and remote PC capabilities. It probably only lacks a tuner, but in all senses, the Smart Monitor is more like a smart television than the traditional monitor on your desk.

For productivity, the Smart Monitor have some things going for it. The built-in Wi-Fi means you can connect it directly to the Internet to access files stored in the cloud, while the remote access function means you can get to the files on the computer it’s connected to, even when you’re out of office or home, as long as there’s an internet connection.

And when you're done with work, open up your favourite streaming apps such as Netflix, HBO Max, Apple TV, Amazon Prime to play your favourite movies or TV shows. All of these are courtesy of the embedded app store in the Smart Monitor's Tizen OS.

But that's not it. The Smart Monitor even comes with a remote control to allow you to navigate the interface, which looks just like the one found on Samsung TVs. And like the remote that comes with the TVs, you can hold down the microphone button on this remote and ask Bixby for help.

The Samsung Smart Monitor is available in two series; the FHD M5 comes with a 1080p display and the 4K M7 serves 4K aficionados best.  Here are their prices:

  • M5 27" — S$548
  • M5 32" — S$698
  • M7 32" — S$898

These new Smart monitors are now available in most regular retail stores such as Courts.
