Holiday Gift Idea 9: the gift of explosions at 144Hz refresh rate

LG 27-inch QHD 27GL850 gaming monitor

The festive season feels like a great time to clear your Steam backlog, and to prepare your gaming equipment for a new year's worth of high-quality titles to lose yourself in. Of course, this means getting a decent monitor for PC gamers.

The LG 27GL850 UltraGear gaming monitor is a 27-inch display with an IPS panel rated at Quad HD resolution (2,560 x 1,440 pixels resolution). As a premium gaming comrade-in-arms, it packs a host of features within its S$899 price tag to make it palatable to the PC gamers.

For starters, it offers 98% of the DCI-P3 colour space and HDR10 support, which is really accurate next to most monitors, let alone gaming ones. The thin bezels also accommodate multi-monitor configurations, so multiple LG 27GL850 UltraGear monitors can double up as a productivity wizard or a massive screen to indulge car racing and flight simulator experiences with excellent clarity.

On the gaming front, it supports 144Hz refresh rates and is also G-Sync Compatible courtesy of NVIDIA. These two traits can guarantee smooth frames with minimal stuttering or tearing. If you're extra competitive, the 1ms gray-to-gray (GtG) response times in Motion 240 Mode gives its user the extra edge. It also packs a host of other tweaks, like Dynamic Action Sync for minimising input lag, and Black Stabiliser for better visibility.

Like most monitors, the LG 27GL850 UltraGear come with two HDMI ports and one DisplayPort connector. It also has two USB ports for other desktop or gaming accessories you might have.

If you're feeling flush on cash, there's a 4K resolution version of this gaming monitor under a different model name and number - the LG 27GL950. It will cost you a pretty penny, but a 4K IPS screen with 144Hz refresh is a rare breed and is definitely catered to those who have a rig to run games at 4K resolution and love to work with nothing but the sharpest screens in the market. More details over here.

Meanwhile, the LG 27GL850 UltraGear gaming monitor is currently available through LG's official channels, such as the online stores of Best Denki, Harvey Norman, Courts, as well as its official representation on Shopee and Lazada.
