X'mas Gift Idea 1: The ultimate video and travelog companion

DJI Osmo Pocket - You'll never want to leave home without it

Hand-held stabilizers for your mobile phone are nothing new these days, but they often require a separate carrying solution as they are fairly large themselves; not to mention their need for spare batteries!

DJI’s latest innovation, the aptly named Osmo Pocket is a miniaturized Osmo that will literally fit in your pocket. Measuring just 122 x 29 x 37mm and just 116g in weight, this is a truly pocketable gadget. Despite the size, it's equipped with a touchscreen to track subjects and traverse the menu options by swiping on-screen. There’s a slot for a microSD card (accepts up to 128GB capacity) and two buttons to start recording and accept settings - all without the use of a mobile phone.

Even with active mechanical stabilization, the Osmo Pocket offers two full hours of recording at 4K 30p. 4K 60p recording is also possible, while 12MP stills are captured in both JPEG or DNG formats. What about its performance you ask? It's surprisingly capable given its 1/2.3-inch sensor as the Osmo Pocket impressed us with details captured under good light. Even at low light, video captured at high ISO setting is clean and usable. As a travel companion and for ad-hoc vlogs, good audio capture is a necessity and here too we found the internal microphones was up to expectations. It’s worth noting that the Osmo Pocket will charge via a powerbank too if needed.

You'll want to plug in your mobile to get the full potential of the Osmo Pocket.

Still, the true flexibility of the Osmo Pocket is unleashed when you pair it with your mobile phone as this allows you a much larger 'viewfinder' and the option to control the gimbal in all four directions smoothly. If using the Osmo Pocket as a standalone, you can only control vertical movement via the rear screen, so having this flexibility helps. Using your mobile phone also hands control over to the new DJI Mimo app that allows for more accurate subject tracking in addition to creating mini video stories effortlessly via built-in templates.

In short, we really like the Osmo Pocket's diminutive size and fuss-free deployment that you can easily bring around with you to whip out at a moment’s notice. For what it does, we’d say S$519 is well worth the price.
