The rumors were almost right - Xiaomi's latest Redmi Note 2 is shaping up to be the best value for money phablet this year.

Available in two models - Redmi Note 2 and Redmi Note 2 Prime, the common specs include a MediaTek Helio X10 processor, 2GB RAM, a 5.5-inch 1080p display, a memory card slot, a 13-megapixel rear camera from Samsung/OV with phase detection autofocus, ultra-fast 0.1s focus speed, 5-element lens, an aperture of f/2.2, a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, dual-SIM 4G support, and a removable 3,060mAh battery with quick charge 2.0.

The two only differences beside the retail price are the clock speed of the processor and the storage option. The Redmi Note 2 is powered by a 2.0GHz chipset and boasts 16GB internal storage space while the Redmi Note 2 Prime runs on a slightly faster 2.2GHz processor and has double the storage space at 32GB.

Xiaomi states that the MIUI 7 OS will bring better performance, battery-saving optimizations and a wider range of personalization options. It also sports a new feature, face recognition in the Gallery app where individuals in photos are identified and grouped together. At launch, the Redmi Note 2 will ship with MIUI 6 with MIUI 7 update slated to arrive at a later date. The launch of the global version of MIUI 7 is scheduled on 19th August in New Delhi, India.

The Redmi Note 2 is priced at 899 yuan (~S$196) while the Redmi Note 2 Prime costs slightly more at 999 yuan (~S$220). They will be available for purchase online in China from 16th August. At time of publication, there is no information on its availability in Singapore.
