Xiaomi to release Rifle mobile processors in May?

Xiaomi's flagship smartphones are powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon processors.

Xiaomi is moving into the chipmaking business this year which can pose a threat to Qualcomm and Samsung.

According to the Korea Times, an official at Xiaomi's component partner claims that Xiaomi is planning to unveil its in-house mobile processors at an event in May. This event is likely to be the launch of the Mi Max phablet and MIUI 8 OS. The mobile processors are reportedly named Rifle and built using a standard core license technology from ARM.

GizmoChina reported last August that Xiaomi was developing two different variants of the processors for its entry and mid-range devices. It is believed that developing the processors in-house can cut costs and help the company price its devices lower.

With the high-end market segment reaching saturation, phone makers are shifting their focus to developing markets where entry and midrange smartphones are increasingly popular. If Xiaomi manages to carve out a slice of the market share, Qualcomm and Samsung stand to lose significant revenue from their chip business.
