Xiaomi CEO hints its future phones may be more expensive
Xiaomi, which is well-known for offering flagship phones at affordable prices, is trying to get rid of this reputation and sell them at higher prices.
In an interview with TechNode, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun shared that the company wants to get rid of the reputation that Xiaomi phones cost less than 2,000 yuan (~S$405) and will invest more to make better products. Jun added that the Mi 9 smartphone could be the last flagship phone from the company to be priced under 3,000 yuan (~S$607) .
“In the future our phones might get more expensive — not a lot, but a little more expensive.” - Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun
Looking back, Xiaomi's flagship phone prices have almost doubled in 5 years. The Mi 3 flagship phone launched with a retail price of S$419 in 2015. Today, the Mi 8 Pro and Mi Mix 3 are priced at S$799.
However, we cannot deny the fact that Xiaomi has improved the design, build quality and performance of its phones over the years and the price increase is somewhat justified. Nonetheless, a hike in phone prices might spur a consumer backlash.
