WWDC 2011 Apple Rumors Roundup

With Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) happening early tomorrow, the internets are going wild with rumors of what's likely to surface. Here's a roundup of rumors around the web.

John Gruber sums up what he thinks the new iCloud service will be:

Don’t think of iCloud as the new MobileMe; think of iCloud as the new iTunes.

With iCloud, that should shift to the cloud. iTunes, the desktop app, currently syncs the following things with iOS devices: audio, movies and TV shows, iBooks e-books, App Store apps, contacts, calendars, bookmarks, notes, and any sort of files shared between iOS apps. All of these things would be better served syncing over-the-air via the so-called cloud.

There's no doubt that iCloud will be big on music. Businessweek chimes in with their own thoughts on what it could be:

Apple's music service, which Engadget and other tech blogs are already calling iCloud, might well represent the future of recorded music. Armed with licenses from the music labels and publishers, Apple will be able to scan customers' digital music libraries in iTunes and quickly mirror their collections on its own servers, say three people briefed on the talks. If the sound quality of a particular song on a user's hard drive isn't good enough, Apple will be able to replace it with a higher-quality version. Users of the service will then be able to stream, whenever they want, their songs and albums directly to PCs, iPhones, iPads, and perhaps one day even cars.

Robert Scoble sounds certain of Twitter integration with iOS 5;

Next week will be a huge week for those of us who have lived on Twitter for last few years. Apple is building Twitter in deeply into iOS5.

Lots of rumors are floating about that iOS 5 will see a major overhaul of the notifications system. Macgasm sums it up (together with a whole bunch of other enticing rumors):

This rumor also finds roots in recent Apple requisitions. Just two days ago, we reported that Peter Hajas, the developer behind MobileNotifer has been hired by a certain company in Cupertino. This time last year it was reported that Apple hired webOS interface designer Rich Dellinger as a Senior UI Designer. Dellinger was instrumental in designing webOS’ notifications, which are regarded as far better than those in iOS and even Android. Apple’s notifications in iOS have bothered me for years, and it really seems like Apple is ready to make some changes here with all of the new blood working on it.

As for Lion, Apple already has an official preview of the brand new feline shipping from Cupertino. New features include Launchpad; an iPad style app launcher, Mission Control; which looks like a new and improved Expose, Versions, which saves multiple versions of the same doc (like Time Machine but very specific), and Resume, letting you restart your Mac and come back to it just as it was.

Here's a video demo of Lion, previewed at Apple's 'Back to the Mac' event held in October 2010.

Apple has formally announced that WWDC 2011 will be all about Mac OS X, iOS 5 and the new iCloud service. So while iPhones one to four have traditionally been released around the mid-year, with announcements happening at WWDC, it seems very likely that there will be no iPhone 5 at WWDC this year.

Of course, if you can't wait to hear the real reveal straight from the fruit's mouth, there are multiple blogs, like Engadget, doing live coverage. Everything starts at 1:00AM Singapore time on Tuesday June the 7th, so be prepared to stay up or simply check in with us again tomorrow morning for HardwareZone's WWDC 2011 round-up!
