According to reports from Gartner and IDC, PC shipments in Q3 2019 grew in the range of 1.5- to 3%. This is despite the headwinds of US-China trade tensions and Intel CPU shortage. The latter already showed signs of easing in the last quarter.

Gartner reports the growth is primarily due to Windows 10 refresh cycle; however, the impact of the refresh cycle varied according to the “local market conditions and the stage of the refresh cycle.” The positive effects of the Windows 10 refresh cycle are mostly felt by enterprise market segment. On the consumer side, Gartner states the back-to-school demand in China and Deepavali festive shopping in India drove PC shipments. In Japan, PC shipments rose from both enterprise and end consumer market segments, according to IDC’s report.

Both research firms agree the top three PC vendors are still Lenovo, HP Inc., and Dell. In the previous quarter, Acer and ASUS registered sharp shipment declines; however, in this quarter, according to Gartner’s report, Acer managed to improve its quarter on quarter growth to 3.3%, and ASUS reduced its decline to -4.4%. The report from IDC was the opposite for Acer as the firm reported a continuing decline for Acer’s PC shipment for this quarter.

According to Gartner, the three leading PC vendors “improved their profit margins from their PC business as a result of declining component prices, including DRAM and SSDs, over the past few quarters.” As mentioned earlier, Lenovo remains the top vendor, and both research firms agree HP Inc. is closing fast on the current leader.
