The Windows 10 upgrade files may well be on your system already

On July 29, Microsoft will release Windows 10 for PCs and tablets. The upgrade will kickoff in the U.S. at 12am ET (that’s 9pm PST on July 28); and if Microsoft were to begin the rollout in its home country first, that means upgrades here wouldn’t happen till 12pm on the 29th. Of course, Microsoft may well follow each country’s timezone (we doubt it), and if so, we’re just moments away.

In any case, as noted by WinBeta, Microsoft has already (quietly) downloaded on some Windows 7 and 8.x systems that have reserved the upgrade the necessary installation files. So perhaps one way to check if you’re in the first wave of this gradual rollout is to check C:$windows.~BT (it’s hidden, of course) to see if anything’s been downloaded. But take note to not mess with the files or even click on any of them to try to get the installation to start; some users have commented that some files got deleted when they tried to start the upgrade on their own. In short, just let the OS do its job.

(For those interested, the final build consumers are getting on July 29 will be 10240.16405.150725-1815.th1. This is a combination of the build that Microsoft has 'finalized' earlier and a patch that contains fixes that the company has been working on since then.)

While you wait, here’s a music video from Microsoft.
