Windows 10 S to become a mode in Windows 10 soon
Microsoft has announced that it’s including an “S Mode” starting with the next Windows 10 update.
In short, this new S Mode is basically Windows 10 S, just that it’s a mode now instead of a separate Windows 10 SKU. Microsoft, if you remember, originally pitched Windows 10 S as this more streamlined and secure version of the OS, as it can only install certified apps downloaded from the Microsoft Store. Windows 10 S debuted on the Surface Laptop and is currently also offered on more than 20 third-party devices, but users have a choice to upgrade it to Windows 10 Pro for free for the time being (US$50 after April 1).
The reason for this change? Apparently, the naming has caused confusion among customers and partners alike, so in the name of “simplifying the experience” Microsoft has decided to offer an S Mode in all editions of Windows 10.
Microsoft:
Starting with the next update to Windows 10, coming soon, customers can choose to buy a new Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro PC with S mode enabled, and commercial customers will be able to deploy Windows 10 Enterprise with S mode enabled.
Like the current upgrade to Pro offer, users can switch out of this S Mode free of charge.
New Windows 10 devices with S mode are expected to arrive in the coming months, which makes sense, since the next major update for the OS (version 1803, a.k.a. Spring Creators Update) is expected to drop next month.
