According to a white paper that was commissioned by Microsoft and released by the International Data Corporation (IDC), an amazing 33% of all software used today is said to be counterfeit. Additionally, IDC predicts the malware industry will be worth as astounding US$114 billion and consumers will waste around 1.5 billion hours this year dealing with malware on their systems.

The paper was based on the information gathered from over 10 countries, 1104 consumer respondents, 973 business users and 268 CIO/IT managers.

The paper also went on to say that the installed base of PCs will grow by a factor of less than 1.5 over the next seven years, and that security on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets is a real worry, mainly because they are much tougher to manage.
