While Apple is busy fighting against an order from the U.S Federal judge to help FBI access data on an iPhone used by a terrorist, the other companies in the tech industry are accelerating efforts to protect the data of their users.
The most popular instant messaging app, WhatsApp, which is used by a billion active users, told The Guardian that it will start encrypting voice calls and group messages in the coming weeks. A formal announcement about its expanded encryption offerings will be made in the next few weeks.
It is important to note that WhatsApp founder Jan Koum supported Apple in its ongoing fight against the FBI with a Facebook post stating that "our freedom and our liberty are at stake". Other major tech companies such as Google, Snapchat and Twitter are also expanding encryption of user data across their services.
