WhatsApp said to be working on encryption for cloud backups

Future WhatsApp cloud backups may be encrypted with a password protection feature.

WABetaInfo shared screenshots on how the feature will be enabled for iOS and Android apps. iOS users can set a password on the iCloud Drive backup to prevent unauthorised access. Users have to set a password that is at least 8 characters long, and must remember them as WhatsApp will not be able to recover it.

Cloud backups to Google Drive and iCloud Drive currently do not have end-to-end encryption unlike WhatsApp chats. Therefore, the security of the cloud backups is dependent on the service providers. In addition, law enforcement and government agencies can access these backups if they have valid search warrants.
