WhatsApp puts new limit on message forwarding to combat Covid-19 fake news

WhatsApp just announced a new measure to combat fake news on Covid-19.

Starting today, WhatsApp is introducing a new limit so that messages can only be forwarded to one chat at a time. The company shared that it has seen a significant increase in the amount of forwarding since the outbreak of the coronavirus. Some users have told WhatsApp that these forwarded messages can be overwhelming and may contribute to the spread of misinformation.

We believe it’s important to slow the spread of these messages down to keep WhatsApp a place for personal conversation.

WhatsApp has been implementing measures over the years to combat fake news on its platform. Since July 2018, it has been labelling messages that have been forwarded many times with double arrows to indicate that they do not originate from a close contact. In January 2019, WhatsApp also limited message forwarding to five people to fight "misinformation and rumours" which led to a 25% drop in message forwarding globally at the time.
